On Thursday 20 September a report was published by think tank Policy Exchange, which found that the hydrogen economy offers “big opportunities” for the UK to decarbonise. However, it also warned that the benefits would not be realised without coordinated leadership from government and industry focused on lowering the cost of sustainable production.

Analysis in the report found that if the natural gas used in industry was completely replaced by hydrogen, industrial emissions could drop by 71%. It recommended that Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund investment should focus on R&D to lower hydrogen production costs and that, in the short-term, national and local government should work with the private sector to invest in long-distance freight, which it said offers the best opportunities for implementing hydrogen use at scale.
