The government’s announcement of a plan to deploy carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS) on a large scale by the 2030s has been welcomed by stakeholders in the energy sector. Energy UK said on Wednesday 28 November: “Carbon capture has a critical role to play in decarbonising sectors where there are few cost-effective alternatives such as industrial processes, shipping, haulage and heating.” Biomass UK described the plans as a “strong step forward”, highlighting the importance of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) also welcomed the plan but recommended that the model for developing infrastructure for CO2 transport and storage should be agreed by the middle, rather than by the end, of 2019.
