The government is supporting new electric vehicle (EV) charging technology that aims to ensure ultra-fast and safe charging for high-powered electric car batteries. Announced on Tuesday 12 June, the PowerDrive Line project is one of 12 innovation projects that will receive a share of £22mn in support as part of the latest round of funding from the government’s Faraday Battery Challenge, which is part of the government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. The project is being led by Southampton-based company Ilika. It is focused on the development of solid state battery cells at scale in the UK and on ultra-fast charging technology to cut charging time to less than 25 minutes.
