The firm behind the new proposal for the Swansea tidal lagoon project – rejected by the government in June 2018 – has claimed that the project could be built within six years without government subsidies. As reported by The Guardian on Monday 4 February the firm, Tidal Lagoon Power, said that several major companies were interested in buying the electricity that would be generated through power purchase agreements (PPAs). The companies reportedly include commercial property developer Land Securities, Cardiff Airport and developer Berkeley Group. Additionally, the lagoon’s backers reportedly believe its prospects will be boosted by the addition of floating solar panels.
