UK Power Networks announced on Friday 22 June that it is to launch London’s first “virtual power station”. The power station will use electricity generated by domestic solar panels on rooftops and storage batteries. UK Power Networks said that it will enable residents to save money on bills and earn revenue by providing their battery-stored power to the grid at times of high demand. The batteries are due to be installed in approximately 40 homes across the Borough of Barnet and will be remotely controlled to optimise the system. The announcement follows a successful trial of the technology in February, during which 45 batteries in customer homes were remotely controlled to minimise consumption during evening peak hours. On average, household evening demand reduced by 60%.
